Ministry to International Students
The Thomson’s recently celebrated ten years of
full-time ministry to international students in Golden. They have had a great
impact on many students. Here is what God is doing in the lives of some present
and former students: "Thanks for making me feel not too far from home,"
says a Muslim woman from Indonesia. A Japanese student says, "I feel that I
am growing in Christ a lot for the last few years because of you! Thank you for
your strong commitment to helping us understand the Bible, and organizing all
the activities for us." Another former student now back in Indonesia wrote
that he and another student and several other families have recently published a
children’s Bible! Another former student is taking seminary classes.
Here is the Thomson’s story of how their ministry
came about:
"As we approached the end of our seminary education, we began
praying about going to Africa as missionaries. At the time, we knew that the
Colorado School of Mines had representatives from about 70 countries and that
some of them were coming to church. But, we were shocked to learn that 80% never
got into an American home and that many returned less open to Christianity than
when they came. We began praying that God would raise up someone to organize an
outreach to these students. Little did we know that God was trying to show us
the need and opportunity right here in our own ‘Jerusalem.’"
As a church, we
are grateful to be able to share in this ministry through partnership with the
Thomson’s.
English Classes Offered for International Women
Each Thursday morning we meet with young women from
all over the world to teach them English. Many are well-educated with college
degrees and professions in their home countries. We spend time reading and
writing English in the first hour. The second hour is spent in conversational
English. For many of them, this is the difficult part. Once a month, one of the
students demonstrates how to prepare a special dish from her country. We also
have baby showers and visits for coffee in their homes. Most of all, we seek to
establish friendships so they can share their feelings or ask for "motherly
advice." Special sessions are held monthly where information is presented such
as fire safety and women’s health issues. During the holidays, our Christian
traditions are explained and a gospel message is given. They are invited to call
at any time to discuss spiritual or personal concerns. We are praying that the
Lord will speak to their hearts and bring them to Himself.
